Occasional Hunting and Shooting: Do You Need to Join a Club?

Do I need to be a member of an accredited association or shooting club for Occasional Hunting / Sport Shooting Applications?

Section 15(2) of the Act states that the Registrar may issue a licence to any person who “IS” an occasional hunter or sport shooter.

This requires evidence to such extent and the Registrar refuses applications where there is no evidence of participation in occasional sporting or occasional hunting activities.

The evidence for occasional hunting can be photographs of participation in hunting activities, letters of invitation to hunt from land owners or letters confiring past hunting experience by fellow hunters or land owners.

For occasional sport shooting – we recommend some form of meaningful evidence of occasional sporting participation.

Our recommendation is simple membership with any sport shooting club or accredited association (ordinary membership) that can later grow into dedicated sport shooting or hunting status (when you start buying different rifles, shotguns and handguns).

At first – for occasional sport shooting purposes – simple membership with a gun club or accredited association will be sufficient and this does not require any minimum participation in activities or anything of that nature.
