Licensing FAQ
Quick answers to common firearm licensing questions in South Africa.
1. How long does licensing take?
Competency: about 90 working days. License: about 120 working days after your competency is approved.
2. Can I apply for more than one license?
Yes, if you meet the requirements for each section (13/15/16) and have suitable motivation and storage.
3. Do I need a safe before applying?
Yes. Provide safe photos (inside showing bolts; outside with a bit of wall/floor).
4. What if my license expires?
If you didn’t renew 90+ days before expiry, the licence ends and you must surrender the firearm to SAPS or a registered dealer before applying for a new licence.
5. Where can I get help with motivations?
